| Terrapin Survival: Swimming Against the Tide After more than a century of direct assault as a gourmet meal, Northern diamondback terrapins are now suffering continuous loss of habitat all along the Atlantic Coast. As more and more development occurs along salt marshes, estuaries, tidal rivers and coastal bays, nesting sites are lost to homes and driveways and roads and seawalls and landscaping, biodiversity of food sources declines, and water quality deteriorates. The result has been declining populations except in a few isolated areas where there has been intensive efforts to conserve habitat and protect terrapins. Still, this video clip represents a mataphor for terrapin survival: swimming against the tide. As soon as conservation eforts slacken in any estuary system, a collapse of existing populations is the likely outcome. |

| Tennessee Tech & Cumberlands Habitat Conservation Plans Tennessee Tech University is deeply involved in the development of habitat conservation plans (HCPs) for the Cumberland Plateau. By bringing public and private stakeholders together, HCPs allow development to go forward even when it may threaten endangered species. HCPs have been used in Western states for years, but the Cumberlands HCPs for forest and water resources are the first large-scale HCPs in Tennessee. |
